1000 plays..

I know it’s pretty lame, but it’s quite nice when your songs get played 1000 times in a day on myspace..

New Tunes

May 30, 2008

I shall be uploading two new tunes this weekend!

It’s quite daunting as the three tracks I’ve put up cover quite a wide spectrum of sound; are people expecting more of a certain style or something new all together? I don’t know and I find the best way is just not to care!

So, as long as mixing goes well tomorrow the songs should be up either late Saturday or on Sunday.

They will be called ‘She Chose Chav’ -  a quite electronicy, poppy, catchy kinda one and ‘A Curious Disease’ - quite heavy and a bit similar to ‘Eyes’ but decidedly different too.

I’m also going to see Sex And The City tomorrow, and of course I am very, very excited.

I had a fun weekend in Leeds, thanks to my friend Matt for putting me up!

A brief summary of the bands I saw and what I thought.

Skipped the que by walking straight in, was too big for my liking.

First band I saw was We The Kings on the main stage - very generic, American pop punk, literally nothing different about them. Then again, didn’t really expect a lot this early on.

Grabbed a beer and headed to the Atticus stage to see We Are The Ocean - these guys are getting quite big round the UK by all accounts. I’m not entirely sure why, it’s a total alexisonfire rip off without any riffs, worse singing, worse screaming… basically they sound just like alexisonfire but sub par in every respect. The only thing they’ve got going for them is that they’re British, so I imagine they’ll hit their popularity ceiling soon enough.

Next I caught some of JB Conspiracy - I don’t really like ska but I guess I had soak up a bit whilst I was there. Tiny stage with lots of people on it - seemed to be doing the ska thing alright and I enjoyed them a bit more than We Are The Ocean. If you like ska, might be worth checking these guys out.

Next I went to watch Valencia - I failed and played in a lift I found so grabbed a beer and headed back to watch Flood Of Red - now these guys were good. Really interested to hear their new record when it comes out, this was a big sound that really worked. I liked a lot. The keyboard player had a sample of a big subby kick drum too, always a winner in my books.

Next caught the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - I know they’re generic but they do it quite well - unfortunately less so live. The frontman let the crowd sing most of the lyrics and the guitars were far too low on the mix. Couple that with a misplaced ballad number, a Foo Fighters cover and a ten minute ‘epic’ closing song and the set was definitely a let down.

Next up I caught Twin Atlantic - I’ve been singing ‘Can Ye Kick It’ to most of my friends lately and was eager to see these guys live. My pre-gig adoration may have had something to do with the overly Scottish accents in their songs and being half Scottish myself but they put on a good show and elicited a greater response from their little audience than the Red Jumpsuits decidedly larger one.

I saw a bit of YouMeAtSix - I don’t like them on record and just to affirm that belief their generic brand of lameness on stage cemented my opinion of them. Dull, dull, dull.

Next I caught the Blackout - really good show actually despite not knowing much of their set, they definitely got the crowd rocking. I do question the need for two vocalists, it could be utilised to a much greater effect, but maybe that’s for their future stuff..

Next up I caught some Kids In Glass Houses - they’re good enough, it’s just a bit too ‘nice’ for me and didn’t get me going. Decent enough band though.

Next we saw some Fightstar - average set I would say - clearly all talented musicians I’m not sure that their songs really have any depth to them and their live performance didn’t exactly blow me away.

Story Of The Year - great show, great performance, great band. Perhaps a bit too samey but it’s good fun. I was probably getting a bit drunk around this point anyway and had to take a massive piss in the penultimate song. What can you do eh?

Went to go and catch some Cute Is What We Aim For - but apparently their singer forgot his passport, although I could have sworn I saw him taking a crap earlier.. anyway caught some boyslikegirls - never listened to these guys before and I doubt I will again. Boring.

The club afterwards was fun - strippers playing with fire and pouring milk on themselves is always a winner. Leeds union is nice too, nicer than mine!

Love Rob

Slam Dunk Fest

May 23, 2008

I’m off to Slam Dunk Festival this weekend.

I know a bunch of people are too - so if you see me, come say hi!

I don’t like Ska so I doubt I’ll be venturing anywhere near that stage and I think it’s going to have to be Story Of The Year over Cute Is What We Aim For.. other than that I could be anywhere!

If you’re not going then take a look at the lineup below!

It’s going to be emotional. :)

Black Metal Sucks

May 19, 2008

Ever heard of Nachtmystium?

Didn’t think so.

There is a reason for this and that is that Nachtmystium, and ever other black metal band, ever, suck.

If you don’t believe me head on over to www.myspace.com/nachtmystium and give your ears some punishment.

For some reason these guys were supporting the wonderful ‘Genghis Tron’ last Thursday and it was without a doubt the worst gig I have ever seen. The only thing more infuriating than their live performance was the fact that they actually appeared to have a fair few fans. I just don’t understand!

The gig mostly involved a ridiculous amount of reverb on the (laughable) vocals, boring, repetitive riffs and being told to drink lots - never a good sign.

The best bit of the set was when two fans decided to have a full on fight and got kicked out.

There you go. I hate Black Metal and I hate Nachtmystium.

I Have Gigs..

May 14, 2008

…. unfortunately not my own, I still need to buy a macbook before they can happen, not too long left though!

So tonight I’m off to see Battles, Dirty Projectors and Fuck Buttons. Should be a laugh.

Tomorrow it’s Genghis Tron, who are hilarious. I think they’re supported by some weird black metal bands, but it should be an interesting show.

Friday I’m seeing Pendulum which I have no doubt will be very awesome indeed.

Unfortunately this leaves me with little time to do my own music this week.

I’ve actually pretty much finished the song I mentioned below, ‘A Curious Disease’, but I’m also nearly there on another song going with the title of ‘She Chose Chav’. Haha.

They both sound quite different so I’d like to put them up at the same time, so until then sit back and enjoy the stuff that’s already up!

Thanks for checking in.

New Song!

May 8, 2008

I’m currently in the middle of recording vocals to a new song, most likely to be called ‘A Curious Disease’.

It’s going pretty good, it sounds heavy in bits, electronic in others and awesome in all.

I have just managed to somehow produce some sort of crazy brutal inward scream on one of the lines and whilst it doesn’t exactly go with the music that surrounds it I can’t seem to replicate this effect again. It sems a shame for it to go to waste.

I might go watch the apprentice now as I missed it last night, although I already found out that annoying Irish alien features woman got fired.

Good news all round.

I aim to finish the rest of the vocals by the end of the weekend and then I’ve got to mix it and re-record anything I decide sounds bad.. so hopefully this time in a week y’all can hear it.

I also want to update the myspace layout and pics as this is just as important, isn’t it?!

Have you heard the new He Is Legend demos? They are probably better than mine are.

See you soon

Robx

I was checking out the new Emarosa tunes yesterday when I noticed a comment from their keyboard player, Jordan. It seems they have been getting a bit of flack for dropping the screaming and breakdowns and instead making the most of their amazing vocalist, Jonny, formerly of Dance Gavin Dance.

The comment reads;
I’m not sure people realize this is the music that we want to make.

If we wanted to scream, we’d get a screamer. If we wanted to play breakdowns, we would. If we didn’t want to do everything in our bounds to challenge and push our self musically we’d settle and play utah forever.

For those who get it, I thank you.

We just write the music we want to write, you decide weather or not to listen.’
What a fantastic comment.

It really annoys me when people message me saying ‘add more screams’, ‘lose the screams’, ‘get rid of the electro’, ‘be less heavy’, ‘be more brutal’, etc…

If I wanted to do any of the above, don’t you think I would?!

Saying that… feedback is always appreciated… !

Anyhow, I hope nobody else had to endure the fun of rail replacement buses yesterday.

Why are there no trains on bank holidays?!

New songs are sounding good at the mo - update shortly…

Keep in touch.
